The Pier

Recommended Posts

I haven't been playing for a number of months, and when I come back the first thing I do is go to the pier to chat and fish. To my surprise it's completely deserted. I miss the pier and fishing on it and all the people there. That's really all I gotta say and I can't imagine I'm the only one. If anyone else feels the same let's be the change we wanna see. I'm gonna start going back to the pier and fishing and I hope we can return it to it's former glory.

it was very cool and all, but at the same time an absolute shit show, so much so that staff would actually just hang out there and wait for the goon shit to start. the constant vdm of a bank truck or a bus going full speed and ramming EVERYONE. The massive terrorist attack where one dude would bring an ak and murder everyone. and later realized that there are no staff online at a certain time so you would just die and be shit out of luck till tomorrow.

Pier was cool but it was a mess and required CONSTANT supervision/ over sight from staff constantly

Man, no one is going to go to the pier when you're asking them to over the forums.

Pierr is dead because people are clearly more focused on farming money rather than communicating or interacting, not to mention how starter criminals would DM, rob and fuck around there.

The pier was already dying even before Burgershot's arrival because it sucks and had so many negative side effects. I can't even imagine how much begging the players had to make on the government website to allow people to park their vehicles inside without having it towed. Pier was so fucking bad. The shitty 'I WILL NEVER TAKE MY MASK OFF NO MATTER WHAT' mentality is also part of it.

Also, sometimes groups/factions host events at the pier which gets it crowded at it's moment, so keep an eye out for it.

I believe the only way people's gonna get back on the pier is by updates. The games behind like the ferris wheel would be neat if activated, somehow. And the fast-food booths inside. The pier is nothing like Santa Monica's pier.

This is the basics of it really. It was very popular when it was a really good money maker balanced with talking to people but as changes were introduced and things were developed people make their money elsewhere now.

That being said,

If you want activity there, go there, try rally friends there etc. I heard some cool government guy is maybe doing an event or two there soon 👀 Maybe it'll bring people there, maybe it won't, who's to say.

Lowkey defs #MakeThePierGreatAgain

piers the only reason I stuck around longer then I did as I hit a drought of motivation to play here like a year ago, but I met people at the pier that brought that spark in the server back for me and I have stayed here ever since.

The pier was a perfect hub to literally VR Vibe with people

I miss pier times but a lot of popular hangout places come and go unfortunately thats how the server goes.
First it was the bank then the pier then legion square and looks like now burgershot.
Unfortunately the amount of people RDMing and ruining RP would put anyone off from going.
But that being said and as Ash has mentioned, rally friends together, start hanging out there yourselves and people will soon start joining, do little event, advertise these events through weazel, its all a matter of what RP people can bring to entice people back.

Here's the main issue really, if the server wasn't so heavily biased towards those who have millions in their banks, I think more people would spend their time socialising instead of farming money. Decrease pricing on things such as guns for crims, and maybe they'll spend less time finding the best money making method and more time socialising.

RIP the 8K Shotgun 😢

It's a shame, when I used to see a new person and stop for a chat, they'd often ask, "Where is a good place to go/meet people?" I'd always recommend the pier, regardless of the time of day, there were people there, all type, legal, illegal, cops and crims. So much life was there, so many people to meet, coupled with an easy, relaxing way to make money.

It's how most of us started off, making some money, making connections. If it wasn't for the pier I would have had such a lower quality experience as a whole. Like @XeV mentioned, it's likely the only reason I played after the 2nd week of my time on the server. I just knew so many people so quickly that going off and finding something to do was so easy and enjoyable.

I think an increase in prices for selling fish would actually help. ICly there hasn't been as much supply of fish, so demand is surely higher 😉

Removing the parking tolls from the pier is a big one I haven't seen mention, also. Every hangout spot that isn't the bank has gone through the same issues I find.

1) Sane people gather in one place to have fun and meet people.
2) Insane people, such as 2 hour playtime crims breaking into cars, DMers and modders flood said area.
3) LEOs flood the area in response due to constant shootouts, stabbings, robberies and so on.
4) LEOs persist the area and tensions rise between both parties, as the crime still continues.
5) The sane people leave due to a mixture of LEOs and insane people.
6) The hangout spot dies off.

I really don't know what the solution to this. I don't blame LEOs for doing their job. I remember reports on the pier taking hours to get looked at though.

Agreed. Even for official factions the price is wild. Let alone the mark up on if you're not official. you're paying 30-50k per heavy sometimes. Crazy to think someone can do 8 straight hours of freelance work IC and buy 2 heavy weapons. That's a whole different discussion though.

huge +1

Hanging out at the pier was always such a good time back in the day because everyone hung out there but because of shitlords and grinders its dead.

The pier used to be almost the central social hub where if the RP was a bit slow you could pop down and see whos about and get some fun interactions going and I miss it deeply.

#makethepiergreatagain

EDIT: (not to make this a dig at LEO factions just an observation) I agree with removing the parking fees down at the pier because 1: Having a good conversation abruptly interrupted by a cop asking you to take off your mask, pay for parking, move your car etc is just inconvenient and irritable and 2: it cuts into the profits of people who are trying to make money via fishing i.e new players relying off freelance jobs to make money for their first car etc. I'm not against the speeding camera placed there but the parking tickets and being annoyed by cops waiting for something to pop off is a deterrent from an otherwise great social meetup spot regardless of your RP background and meeting new people

There is a really easy fix for this...don't break the law in a very public and open space, and cops won't harass you 😄 if you paid for the parking, didn't wear a mask and parked your vehicle properly to begin with, cops won't have a reason to say anything to you.

I don't see an issue with removing the parking pay though. But that sounds like an IC discussion with the state government to have that done.

My suggestions to #MakeThePierGreatAgain:
I could and should do a whole suggestion post on 'reviving the pier'

The issues:
1. Money. Fishing doesn't pay well at all in comparison to other things and after the 35% tax that many players have its not worth it.
2. Speed Cameras. 80% of the people when asked ICly why they don't go to the pier answer with 'the speed cameras and police targeting'.

Potential solutions:
1. Overall pay increase in fish.
2. Different types of fish like we had in 2019 combined with the pricing system the butcher uses for different meat types! The more rare the fish the more they pay!
3. Illegal Fishing drop off that avoids taxes and pays in cash - No longer is fishing a pure legal thing to do!
4. No speed cameras, but keep parking ticket requirements though.

These are my personal opinions and not that of staff

If every person who said 'I miss the pier' 'The pier was great' 'It was a place to meet people' went to the pier and stayed there for awhile so when other people go there they see them.. and just keep doing it.. it will come back.

Bored? In between big criminal activity? Head to the pier. Just have it be the default 'welp, let's try the pier and talk to people there' and we have a good shot.

Even with 'the fishing gang' moniker we do not mind, I'll be telling my faction: Spread time between hanging out at HQ in between ops and roleplay scenarios with time on the pier. We'll see how it goes.

like honestly what killed the pier was crims being afraid of being labeled "pier gang" off rip, but like I rather be social active with the community and called a pier gang then be isolated to only talking to people within my group

Cops killed it as well writing parking tickets as paying for parking is just not worth it (paying per x amount of time and the amount of fish caught per hour was like profiting like 20$)

Also getting your car stolen 24/7 but with the new update of having to HOTWIRE AND PICKLOCK, if you car gets stolen its deserved so no fear of getting your shit yoinked anymore

BRING IT BACK

WE AS A COMMUNITY MUST POPULATE THE PIER AND MAKE IT ACTIVE AGAIN, and I myself will be spinning the pier more in-between my down time and chatting with anyone I see there and inviting more people down. I PERSONALLY want the pier back as I miss the social hub and theatrics of the locals

I don't think that going back to the Pier is a good idea, the popularity of the pier happened naturally.

I mentioned some time ago about the implementation of the Los Santos Mall and as far as I'm aware, that's still the plan in the future so that should be quite the meeting point, a little more organically than the Pier given what there would be to do there.

When are we going to get the mall? Years down the line? I've treated every promise of updates from the development team with tempered expectations for a while and it seems to have worked out. I don't think we can rely on the development team to fix the hangout problem in the meantime.

I disagree. The pier is here now and if people want to go to a mall as an engagement point in the future, sure. Right now, we have a place where people just need to go, stay, and tell friends. If it happens, great, if it doesn't, sucks. We have to just do it.

You will get it before the Pier comes back, I'd guess. The pier wasn't removed, people made the conscious decision to stop going there and I can understand all the reasons why but it's like the bank before it, new things comes along and there becomes somewhere else to hang.

These things don't tend to catch fire when they are engineered, better that they happen naturally.

I agree with Bala. Things are usually arent as interesting/successful the second time around. The rise of the pier came naturally and trying to force it to become popular again is like swimming upstream. The moment you stop trying you will end up right back where you started. Hopefully in the future there will be a new hangout spot for people to go which will happen naturally through IC gameplay.
