Increased AFK timer.

Recommended Posts

I feel the AFK timer needs to be tweaked or adjusted it's kind of a pain when you're in the middle of RP and have to run around like a lunatic in order to prevent from getting kicked and stopping your current animation in order to do so as well, i kind of feel like this breaks the RP immersion level a lot, and normally after something like happens you have to make up some BS excuse in game like you had to stretch or something random that makes do dam sense ICLY, this tends to happen a lot during interviews and other more hardcore RP sessions which require tpying/a meeting setting.

What do you guys think? i know it's not something major but i feel like it breaks the immersivenes of RP, it's literally an OOC client side script that affects the way you act during some RP sessions, in real when setting down talking/having an interview/meeting you don't just get up and move around.

I have a mixed feeling about this.

On one hand yeah, I can understand feeling like it breaks the immersion a little because you have to get up and move around every now and then to beat the AFK timer... but on the other hand, it's obnoxious when people go afk in public and you roll up to them to rob them, heal them, arrest them, whatever and they're just dead silent because they're afk. It's immersion breaking to move around during interviews / heavy RP, but it's also immersion breaking to find someone who is AFK and can't be treated/robbed/arrested/etc. If these players are given the opportunity to stay in place for 15 minutes instead of 5, that means people standing near them have to spend 15 minutes telling people that player is afk, rather than the 5 we have in place now.

I think at the end of the day, my vote would be -1 on this.

I understand feeling annoyed by having to get up and doing the 'afk dance' every now and then, but each game I've ever played where RP is involved, there's always a glitch, a bug, a system, etc. in place that forces the RPer to do something in OOC in order to continue role playing. Fellow RPers, especially those who have experience in the game you're playing, will see this and know you're just doing what's necessary to keep RPing. It will never be viewed as non-RP (assuming it's justified movement), so you just need to remind yourself: just because the player is moving doesn't mean the character is moving. What you see isn't always what's actually happening.

I understand the worries people have about this, however I feel the current time is far too low. Right now you get kicked for being AFK before you can even finish robbing a store. For the person pointing the gun this can be especially annoying as sometimes the shopkeeper tends to have a weird hitbox and puts his hands down when you try to move to avoid the AFK timer. The AFK timer is doing far more harm right now then it is actually solving: People that really want to not get kicked for being AFK find a way to work around it anyway.

So should it be removed then? No, it definitely shouldn't. We shouldn't make it easier for people to go AFK. However I do feel a change is needed considering that the way the system works right now, it causes more hinderance than it solves problems.

Hard one.
I would love it yes, but I do see its purpose.
I just hate it though when you finally in a good anim and the AFK timer comes aorund the corner... Then you get out the anim, try to walk enought to make it stop and you end up getting hurt/injured (mainly in houses).
I did thought about something though; Maybe a random generated code in chat you have to type over so you dont have to move ouot of your anim.

Like I said, its annoying, but it has a purpose I can see in it.

Not a + or a - for me, I stay neutral.

The AFK timer seems adaptive, is t based on server population? It doesn't always seem to be the same amount of time. I've had times where I'm standing around for 20 min, before I think "Maybe I should move... odd.. afk timer hasn't popped up yet, I wonder if I got disconnected. /stats. Nope, all good." Then other times when it seems like it's only a few minutes.

I agree it should be refined, I do see why it exists though. Thinking maybe take into account chat or voice activity, but that can be abused with macros. Even though movement can also be abused by macros.

I count the AFK timer by going to the toilet to take a leak and smoking a cigarette. I never have time to do both things because I'm getting kicked.

I would say ECLIPSE is doing something good for my health status. J/K

Increase the timer with 5 minutes so I can do both 😄

Not a bad idea, really. Could be an alternative to the AFK dance we have right now.

Have a command that allows players to type something like /resetafk, so when the AFK timer pops up, players can type that to indicate they are actually there and stop the AFK timer from kicking them.

The dange of that is people can create scripts that automatically fill that in once in a while

It is a risk, yeah. People will create macros to keep themselves in the game if they go afk, but remember:

If you go afk, people are going to notice. Whether you're standing around somewhere in an alley, or wherever you choose to afk, eventually someone is going to find you and report you for being afk. Admins can track if someone is unresponsive, but typing in the /resetafk thing, which hints to a macro. Players will be punished accordingly for doing this.

People own houses they can stand in that are private. I for one have done it. I never use macros or scripts, but I can't say I've never stood in my house with my game windowed on my second monitor while I watch movies.

People will find a way to beat the script regardless, unfortunately.

Oh well.

Just like with every script: if the admins / devs found it was being abused, then they can just turn it off; kind of like what they do with the snow.

At this point, I'm of the mind that since we don't reach the max player limit every day on Eclipse, people being AFK isn't a big deal unless they are doing it in public and are unresponsive to RP attempts. If, on the other hand, we started getting close to 1000 players every day, THEN I'd be a little stricter regarding people being AFK instead of being offline.

There is an easy way to work around the current AFK script aswell: Just have make a macro so you walk in circles. There is always going to be a work around I am afraid there's nothing to do about that. Just like with the rules, this server is built on trust. You have to put a little bit of faith in the playerbase.

Too easy to use a script and stay afk in a house or something, having a 6 digit code or something pop up on screen and then asking a person to write it back would be easier and removes any scripts

I think the problem is that it's becoming a more reoccurring issue in recent times, which is why, although not a major issue, it's worth dealing with it whilst it's still only a small issus

Macroing is punished harshly. I would advice againts it.
