  4. 信頼 A LESSON IN TRUST Trust was one of the many core values held highly to Dojin-Kai members. Over time, members of the Dojin-Kai should learn to trust everyone like their own blood-related family. To raise the importance of trust within the Dojin-Kai to others, Lola planned and held an open evening session for anyone that wished to join. She was pleasantly surprised of the turn out and proceeded with the session. The session began with the simple question; what is trust? No one held back and shared their own definitions of trust. Lola followed up the question with a request and asked all the members to think of someone in their life that they trust completely. They stated names outside and within the organisation, as well as expressed this level of trust they have in themselves. Then, she asked them if they could truthfully say they trust all the members of Dojin-Kai the same way. Unanimously, and to none of Lola's surprise, the answer was "No." The session was going just as she had planned it. She picked out one of the trials (Minarai, 見習い) and asked him to step forward, facing the other members. She proceeded to let Zez go before bowing to him, thanking him for his co-operation. His lack of restraint were testament to the trust he built in a matter of days of knowing her. She invited Lesley onto the mat and handed him the knife, before inviting Tayven to stand before him. Lola's instructions were simple: "I give you permission to hurt him." Her decisions on who to bring onto the mat and for what exercise were entirely calculated. Although she had known Lesley since the beginning of Dojin-Kai, she was also aware that many members were not as close to him and only acknowledged him as one of the Wakagashira-Hosa members. These members were the Dojin-Kai aggressors expected to take lead in the face of combat, so his ability to fight was not a secret. Because Lesley's moves in Dojin-Kai were silent, she paired him with a member with one of the loudest personalities. Everything continued to go to plan, including the somewhat angered and fearful reactions of the members. She moved onto the next exercise. Just in time for the session, she invited James to help its facilitation, to which he gladly accepted. James stepped forward and began to work down the line slowly, placing the gun to people's foreheads - simultaneously challenging them. His words continued to daringly mock them, but none of them budged. Some showed signs of discomfort. He then put the barrel to Livvy's back. Lola and James carefully observed the reactions of their other members. He continued to challenge them, asking them why they're not stepping up to help her and questioned if they'd simply let her die in front of them. However, it was all part of the exercise. All members remained still, fighting their instincts to defend her. Once the gun was returned to Lola, James asked the question once more; "Did none of you step forward because of my role as the Oyabun?" Several members nodded, with some confessing that they wanted to. However, Livvy stressed that she didn't react because she put her trust wholly into James, despite being the one held at gunpoint. As the session came to a close, Lola had planned one final exercise. She pulled out an envelope and revealed to them that she had $10,000 inside of it. She proceeded to hand out a piece of paper to each member, asking them to write the word SPLIT or STEAL. The outcome rules were simple. Should all members write split, the money would be equally shared between all. Should one person write steal, then that person will receive all of the money, no questions asked. Should more than one person steal the money, then no one receives it. To her surprise, one member decided to steal. Once announced, everyone in the room flared in outrage. Whoever wrote to stole the money was then given ten seconds to confess before getting given the money, no questions asked. Following the session, Lola promised that no one who know that the money was given to her. The person stepped forward and admitted to stealing the money, before splitting it amongst the members herself. The family shared an evening of both laughter and tension. Some members were pushed to their limits and forced to face and re-evaluate the level of trust that they had in others. Trust will continue to be earned and proven for over time, as well as remain a high-standing value of the Dojin-Kai. [recorded video of the exercise]

  9. トレーニング TRAINING Lola finally found the opportunity to visit the Dojo to train. Particularly in the last several weeks, she had dedicated her time to meetings and present conflicts. Nevertheless, as she stepped into the Dojo for the first time in a while, all her worries seemed to evaporate. Members of the Dojin-Kai frequented the Dojo to train and spar with one another. She was pleasantly surprised to see it was fairly quiet, with only one other Kobun training by the punching bags. Like every training session in the past, she began with meditation. As she neared the end of her training, she saw Jimmy Santa, the Kobun, packing up his gear in his bag. She invited him to a spar, to which he happily accepted. As a brown-belt herself, she treated the spar as an opportunity to teach and train with the white-belt, walking him through attacking, defending, and balancing. To no surprise, Jimmy impressed her with his fighting ability. Once the spar was over, she and her opponent bowed towards one another and began to make their own ways out of the Dojo. She looked forward to the building opening to the public, where members of the community can experience the space like it was their own.

  18. LOLA MILLERS' STORY LIFE IN LOS SANTOS One day, Lola received a call from her cousin, Paris, about the possibility of moving to Los Santos. Paris had been beaming about the city constantly; the people, the nightlife, and the opportunities available. As sensational as Paris made the city out to be over the phone, Lola already knew that the city would share a dark history enveloped with crime - after all, criminal organisations are the hidden gears to any big city. Living a bleak life back home, she decided that it was a time for change. She arrived in Los Santos with just a suitcase of clothes and enough money to last her a week. Paris provided her with her first trusted contact, Ghost, who she would later get to know as James. Lola continued to work swiftly under the radar, managing a group of trusted women under ‘Code Name Lisa’, who were tasked with the identification and manipulation of influential men in the city. She kept the moves she made in the city quiet, only speaking to others when necessary. As she continued to settle in, the relationships she developed continued to flourish. THE BEGINNING, AS A MINARAI (見習い) Before the Dojin-Kai, Lola’s character was much different from how it is now. She carried life recklessly, saying and doing whatever she pleased regardless of the consequences that came with it. The founders, James and Jake Sakamoto shared reservations about whether she should at all be involved considering her history of mishaps and stubborn attitude. During a formal meeting with the brothers, Lola spoke with clarity and maturity, a side to her that they admitted to never have experienced before. She was clear about her intentions; she would try to change in favour of joining a new family. Despite her past mistakes, she was passed through as a Minarai under the faith of James, who had known her since her move into Los Santos. Every promotion that followed continued to surprise her. PRESENTLY, AS A KYODAI (きょうだい) After the war, her efforts and loyalty to protecting the family were recognised and Lola reached her current rank as a Kyodai. Her newfound role came with a series of responsibilities, including the mentoring and recruitment of Minarai. She held this role highly, specifically with kindness and openness. She realised the astronomical speed of which the Dojin-Kai was continuing to grow, so to her it was most important that every member feels that they have a place in the Dojin-Kai family, regardless of whether they were a trial. She constantly worked to give them the respect she’d give any other member as well as the respect she’d expect to be given back. One of her responsibilities was to perform Sakazuki ceremonies for her assigned Minarai mentees. These ceremonies acted like a formal welcome into the family, marking the Minarai’s new commitment to their potential brothers and sisters. Lola had carried out several of these ceremonies, inviting her Minarai into the Dojo for the ritual to be carried out. Outside the Dojo, she set and maintained an image in public, which was to carry herself with humility, discipline, and decorum. Nothing less was expected from her mentees. She, herself, knew that she still had a lot to learn, so approached every mistake made with forgiveness - both to herself and to other members of Dojin-Kai. FAMILY (家族) Alongside her brothers and sisters, she has experienced extreme multitudes of grief and anger. The torment that she faced during the war would be carried with her for the rest of her life but it would continue to be her motivation to work harder and smarter. Much of Lola's life now was owed to the Dojin-Kai. HER SAKAZUKI RITUAL: THE DREAM, THE NIGHTMARE, & THE AWAKENING From time to time, Lola would reminisce about her journey since her move to Los Santos and how much she changed. She would remind herself of her own Sakazuki ritual when she was a Minarai, which bought her into a place of trauma, then back out into the safety of her Dojin-Kai family. She’d feel more at peace everytime;
