Weazel is unable to access CCTV cameras scriptly... why?

Recommended Posts

  • Who is the suggestion for?
    - Weazel News Reporters / writers
  • Why is the suggestion being made?
    - OOCly Weazel News Senior+ employees have OOC permission to RPly use /do's to access CCTV footage. while this is great and all for in game, actively RPing with a nearby individual, this does nothing for actually being able to create visual content for weazel to produce. no one wants to watch a video of the chat with /me's and /do's. gross

  • What are the pros and/or cons of the suggestion?

  • Pros
    - Allow Weazel employees to produce high quality in character video footage for the server to enjoy.
    - Allow Weazel employees to scriptly use things they're allowed to do without being hindered IC by LEO's or waiting around for Server staff to maybe help
    - the system / script already exists for Law enforcement, just add it to the correct ranks within Weazel.

  • Cons
    - abuse of the system? idk. people would get fired quick or OOC punished, just like if they abused the ads system

  • How should the suggestion be implemented?
    - Give Weazel Employees of the correct rank access to use CCTV footage, like Law Enforcement Officers.

  • how will this benefit RP?
    - Media employees within Weazel News will be able to record visual footage of things that happened in character with the CCTV camera system, rather than being ignored or told no by law enforcement when asked for access to things we OOCly have permission to access ourselves. This will allow people with video editing experience within weazel news to use the recorded CCTV footage to produce content for people to enjoy IC and OOC.

WEAZEL NEWS handbook states that Senior+ Media/journalists have access to CCTV footage
Following the steps to access footage, having a laptop on hand, dropping it on the ground, and attempting to access a CCTV camera, we get an error, "you do not have the encryption key required for this CCTV!"
why give us OOC permission to use CCTV's but not support it scriptly? not having access to the visual aspect of the CCTV hinders what type of work Weazel is able to do IC when we have OOC permission to access them.

From reading this the permission for CCTV looks to be access to weazel news CCTV around the building and was probably added way before script CCTV was a thing. In general some CCTV cameras should be access by other people, however this should target the whole player base and not just weazel news.

For example

Shop owners should be able to see their CCTV

DCC should be able to view CCTV at LSC

LSC should be able to view CCTV at LSC

Weazel News should be able to view CCTV at Weazel News

CCTV camera footage is in-character, if you get told no by law enforcement, that is something that can be addressed in-character between faction leaderships.

no, we have OOC perms to use it. but its not scriptly supported. its an OOC issue.

the handbook was written in 2023.

we have OOC perms to use /me and /do to "review" any CCTV footage, but its not scriptly supported, so we either have to rely on players who are scriptly supported or request help from admins. if we're allowed to use the cameras via /do, why not support it with the script and give us access to visually see it so we can record it for content?

I'm going to -1 this because it makes no sense why a News Corporation would have any access to CCTV footage at all. News companies in the US only get and use footage that is released to them from Law Enforcement, and they cannot just go into a store and ask the shop manager for the CCTV footage for a news story to cover on TV or in a news article.

anyone can request anyone for their security camera footage, it doesnt have to go through law enforcement IRL.

a news company would typically send a request to whoever owns the camera to access to the footage, be that private, business, or government. from there the footage could be saved and handed over to news media for making content with it.

the problem with that in the real world vs in game, the footage in game is only saved for 30 minutes, so if you dont get it right then and there, you dont get it at all.

RPly we can request the owners of the camera, be it a private, buisness, or government camera, permission to use the camera, but thats all IC handled.

because of the 30 minute limitation on the CCTV footage, we're time gated to access the footage. it would be unreasonable to expect us to IC contact whoever the owner is, hope they're logged on, call LEO's to access the footage, and have it handed over, for us to use, within a 30 minute timespan, when we RPly have permission to use them, but its not supported by the script, when the script already exists for others who also have permission to use them.

We would be able to pull the footage, and then send a request to whoever owns the camera for permission to use it. when the footage only exists for 30 minutes, its unreasonable to expect us to email, wait 3 days, get permission, and then the footage is gone. lol

" they cannot just go into a store and ask the shop manager for the CCTV footage for a news story to cover on TV"
yes they can.

we cant willy nilly use the footage whenever and however we please, theres IC ways to handle it, just like we cant willy nilly pull out sniper rifles for camera use and use them whenever and however we please.

You can't pull out a sniper rifle because it's an admin spawned asset as there is no actual camera asset that's available or implemented. Not really something to compare it to. Gaining CCTV footage for something that was say used in a crime ends up being evidence requiring News casters to obtain said footage released by the Police for citizen visibility to assist with the case, or if those involved are already apprehended.
