RACISM (Why is this STILL ALLOWED???) CHANGE!

Recommended Posts

During my recent couple of weeks of being on this server It has come to my attention that there is multiple accounts of racism (people calling each other terrible, awful, names; racists terms being used multiple times) & absolutely no discipline for these actions. My question is why is that? Especially considering everything going on in the real world. I've heard multiple arguments where "Its a roleplay server people are really racists in real life so I can say the N word whenever I please". I feel as though this is completely unacceptable whether its a video game, a roleplay server, it doesn't matter it brings toxicity into the community that makes so many people uncomfortable. Yes racisms is in the real world I'm aware of that, and this is a Roleplay server which I as a player am also aware of. However why allow the toxicity in the real world to even be apart of the Eclipse community.  Why do I (as a streamer) have to continually watch whom I'm around or especially in high populated places for derogatory terms. It's as simple as adding a rule adjustment to where NO RACISM IS TOLERATED. Not only I feel like this would bring mature audience's to the city, I feel like it would also boosts the community. NO ONE (& I repeat) NO ONE wants to play or be apart of a toxic community. This shouldn't even be arguable it doesn't matter if your IC or OOC asking for consent to be a racists just doesn't do it for me?? For example if someone asks me for consent to be a racists in game and I accept, what about the others around RPing or other people. As for myself I've been in these situations where I haven't been apart of the RP however my character was in the same area as the derogatory racists terms being used and I as a (streamer/gamer) felt completely uncomfortable of the derogatory racists terms being used. If you are truly a racists then so be it, you as a person are entitled to yourself and your own opinions but it doesn't give anyone the right to make other people completely uncomfortable or feel as though its not even about roleplay at that point (its the person behind the character in OOC shoving there opinions down other players throats who don't have the same (racists beliefs) as that person OOC). I truly do not understand how this rule has yet to implemented. All I asks from the admins/moderators is to REALIZE this is an immense problem in this server and something has to be done about it.

I don't understand if these rules are necessarily meant for a change or meant to shut up the people who don't consent to racists roleplay. My question is WHY if racisms is not allowed OOC (considering this is a roleplay server based on real world actions) why even give it the time of day to allow it in the Eclipse RP server. The fact that it has been argued over multiple times and only slight adjustments have been made and STILL racists terms are still being used and others are offended about it. I do not understand why this topic is even in conversation other than the fact those who do the rules adjustment are simply "racists". I do not understand how this hasn't come into conversation more as to "why have we not done anything about it, Why are there still reports coming in of people being offended of racists terms". Why not save the whole community/staff/moderators/ a headache as a whole and simply implement a rule where its absolutely UNACCEPTABLE in this community.

Last but not least if you are in any way OFFENDED by this thread, I'm sorry to inform you but YOU are part of the problem.

I would like to highlight ; this thread was made to open the conversation of "WHY NOT CHANGE?". I simply don't see anyone losing anything if a serious rule was implemented for these racists derogatory terms. What is there to lose if this rule was implemented, other then the fact this would no longer be an ON GOING issue within the community or being confusing for members of the back and forth of whats acceptable and whats not acceptable. As I have stated before, I feel as though this rule was implemented to "shutup" those who do have a problem with racism and not necessarily for any change at all. My question to the admins/mods as a whole is WHY IS THAT?

The image below clearly states

"To be further clear, this is not a change but really a clarification on where the line is drawn between these two bullets"

This issue was addressed by a head admin on the 30/08/2020 on the public announcement discord section.

If this issue has been addressed why has there been multiple accounts of complaints of racists terms STILL being used. Sounds to me YES the issue has been addressed however, ZERO change has been. The whole reason for this forum is to open the conversation up for change to be done, not to be reminded of what has already been addressed.

+1 I think a blanket explicit ban should be issued. The announcement made by Ballin helped, but the words can still be used. I would argue the word will inherently be offensive, especially with regards to people of colour, a direct attack on an uncontrollable factor such as skin colour. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I don't think I've seen the word used once in an appropriate RP context. It doesn't add anything to the realism of the situation, at all. If saying the n-word is the thing that is stopping you from doing great RP then I don't know what else to say, that's just pretty sad.

This is an issue thats always been a bit weird for me. On one hand I think that people should be able to RP whatever they want to, even if its as a racist character. However, the actual depth and quality of that type of RP would likely be extremely low.

On the other hand, allowing racism on an assumed consent basis and relying on those who do not wish to experience it to revoke that assumed consent through /b is not a conducive environment to create a high level of RP and encourage people to make content on the server. Other streamers and content creators have mentioned it before, but having this assumed consent rule on racist language, even using the n word within a friendly context, creates unnecessary worry for anyone hoping to make content on the server. ECRP has quite a large player base, yet is extremely under-represented on Twitch and Youtube. Arguably the server doesn't need streamers to direct more traffic to the server, but more popularity can't hurt. You see the popularity of other RP servers being streamed on Twitch and Eclipse could reach that one day, but it needs to fundamentally change the ECRP culture, in terms of the assumed consent basis for racist language and the greater culture of RP to try to switch ECRP from a GTA RP MMO to a true, varied Roleplaying environment, though the latter is a conversation that can be had in another thread.

As someone who streams ECRP myself on Twitch, and along with what some other streamers have said, its not nice to feel like you have to exclude yourself from certain scenarios and types of RP because someone might be too keen on saying the N word or other racial slurs, regardless of its in a malicious or friendly manner, and for me personally, enabling content creators to proudly stream and make videos on ECRP takes precedent over my opinion that people should be able to RP as even the lowest dregs of society. I'm not keen on this same conversation being had over and over again in different threads, but my personal opinion? Merge racism into the GrossRP rule that includes torture and sexual content, and make it a type of RP that can happen strictly under a given consent basis.

Again said as above, Ballin addressed this issue a few weeks back with stating vulgar racist or such rp should be asked for via consent and not a slur thrown around. Changes were made simply because of streaming guidelines and such. Now, even if the route were to be taken in the form of a punishment, i really don’t see that being of much change. Rule breaks happen all the time, I can’t see if we were to strictly enforce the OOC consent rule any more than the others to be of much help. Rules are set forth to stop people from starting chaos but it still happens, sadly.

Ballin said the hard R requires consent OOCLY, as it’s considered gross RP. Does that solve the issue? No it doesn’t. The logic that people break rules regardless doesn’t resolve the issue either, it’s a lazy response to a real issue this server has. The only solution is to blanket ban anything racist, and punish people accordingly to set a new precedent.

Sorry for my rather "lousy response" but if someone wishes to RP a character that is racist then they may. I feel personally if we start to "blanket" character options then we kill RP within the server. To each their own, best of luck!
