Lockable Glove Boxes/Car Firearm Safes

  • To legally own a firearm, you require a gun safe in your car if it is to be stored there. If you store your firearm in the possible scripted areas, you have a 1/3 chance that it gets yoinked by a some bobby-pinning boofah swiping glove boxes and center consoles.
  • I propose an addition to the U menu that locks/unlocks a new inventory accessible with something like /CarSafe or U menu integration.
    • This would still be pick-able for the real slim-shady's, but at an increased difficulty (could add scaling with safe quality, either be assigned to the car or customizable at mechanic shops).
  • I lightly mocked up what it could look like:

I'd love to hear what your thoughts are.

+1 to this, A safe inside a car would solve alot of problems, Especially if the contents are protected if the vehicle winds up at mors. Especially with a tiny inventory like that. Idk how it would work from a scripting point of view but it would be a god send for new players who want to keep anything at all safe without rellying on parking the vehicle in city parking.

I don’t agree with this part of that persons suggestion. I feel like it would be too easily abused by criminals who will go out of their way deliberately to destroy their vehicles to the point of being sent to mors to hide guns or other such things, maybe some work around to ensure it’s not abused in that way if it’s implemented.

my only concern is the flip side of that, where criminals find a safe inside a car and drive it into a body of water to get access to the items inside instead of using roleplay mechanics to break open the safe. Even if the items in the safe are destroyed fully keeping them out of the hands of the thief in the event of a car being destroyed would be preferable.

I hear where you're coming from--I wonder if that would be an easy rulebreak to notice though?

Maybe as a workaround that doesn't clog up reports, upon vehicle destruction, items in the safe could drop into a physical safe entity that can't be picked up, but could be opened/picked/cut/etc.? So if you drive a vehicle into water, technically anyone could get it, but the owner would have a much easier time (with the key). That's just an off-the-cuff thought so I'm sure that has its own abuse avenues I'm not considering at the moment 😅

I definitely feel like this would be the preferable option, since the safe is physically installed in the car and metaphorically a *part* of the car, if the car is destroyed, so is the safe and the item. I mean you could make an argument then that everything else not in a safe would be destroyed too rather than fall out, but in that case realistically the glove compartments and trunks would fall open in a junked up car and the items would be easily taken.

Ideally, it comes with a little cost to offset the easiness of it all, say a couple grand at a mechanic shop, to involve them a little, too.

Then, whereas the vehicle owner (or key holder(s)?) can use the U menu to lock/unlock the safe (perhaps add an action timer of a few seconds to 'balance' the concept of an easy, fast, locked away gun out of thin air or whatever), other players inside the vehicle have the option to pick the lock of the safe in the U menu.

That way, in one swoop, you add a cost, establishing it as an "upgrade" to the car, respecting the criminal element of item theft, and adding an extra level of perceived security for vehicle items. At the very least, it addresses the issue of getting into a car, dragging the items into your inventory, and leaving within a span of seconds.
