I understand your concern, when you think about the pockets you have, you're able to hold a lot more in-game than you reasonably should do. However, concessions do need to be made to actually make the game playable, which is what I view the inventory system as currently. Reducing inventory size to replace it with a backpack makes little sense to me, as it just serves to frustrate the process of playing the game. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to being able to wear a backpack AND carry a bag if the backpack offers a weight reduction, but even then that might make certain jobs a tad too profitable. I would be opposed to further lowering the current player inventory from what it is. Sure backpacks could be cool but not at the cost of limiting normal player inventory.
