[Technical Support] BillDryden - RageMP Low GPU Usage

Issue Being Reported: Low GPU usage and FPS

Date and Time of Issue (GMT): 20/08/2024 - 2:42AM

Account Name: BillDryden

Evidence and/or notes worth mentioning: When I launch GTA Story or Online Mode via Steam my GPU usage is like 35%-95% and the game is smooth and stays around 55-64 fps no matter where I go and without stutters. However when I play on the server via RageMP my GPU usage is like 15% and out in the countryside I get 55-60fps but in the city I get like 30-38fps and my GPU is still only 15%. I did notice that RageMP uses a different .exe than the normal GTA V game so I wondered if this could be the issue? My game is SO smooth in normal GTA but as soon as I use Rage it horrible and choppy and isn't using my GPU fully.

I would appreciate any ideas people have and I have already tried so many things but this is really ruining my experience in the server so it'd be amazing if I could fix it. I see people streaming and on other RageMP servers and their gameplay is smooth as butter so I'm hopeful it can be fixed.

Thanks in advance,

Bill Dryden

Hello there, your game runs smoothly in Single Player and Online mode due to the fact that the base GTA V game is properly optimized without additions. However, for RAGEMP and its substitutes, they are alternative multiplayer platforms which means modifications, added interiors, scripts and so on are utilized to provide a dedicated experience.

This can cause issues to players with Medium to Low-End PCs, and even High-Ends in some cases based on the graphics settings set (reducing the settings to gain more FPS may cause hardware bottlenecks in some cases). Can you provide the specs that you have currently? Also are you playing at 1080p or a higher resolution? What graphics settings do you have set up for the game?

Thank you for your reply,

I did consider the fact that it might be because of all the extra items, interiors and modifications but the part I found strange is that my GPU was at around 15-20% usage and my CPU was at around 50% and RAM around 70% so it didn't seem like any of my hardware was causing a bottleneck.
I've managed to fix it in a way by putting all settings on low and just using MSAA to force the GPU to take on more of the load (it'll stay around 90-95%) and give me 58-61fps in Legion but it seems that it'll be smooth in the city but then when I go up North it will dip under a certain threshold and dip my GPU use again to 15-20% with an FPS of around 35-40. It feels like the GPU isn't receiving enough load until I ramp up some settings to make it use more of it's power but then of course one setting that works in a populated area will then be ineffective in a more remote area.

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4gb)
Processor - AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Eight-Core Processor 3.00 GHz
Installed RAM - 16.0 GB (DDR3 I think)

I play at 1920x1080 - 60Hz
These are my current settings but I am constantly tweaking them so I wouldn't class these as "accurate":

It seems to be a combination of server assets/additions affecting performance, and your specs which may be struggling to keep up and provide stable gameplay. Given that it has been reported several times about FPS drop issues in certain areas where interiors are rendered and visible all the time like City Hall and LSC, I would suggest tweaking your settings as much as possible to achieve a stable framerate. Again even with High-End PCs there are issues on the server that are being investigated, but that's as much as you can do at the moment.

Yes I think you're right as when I am at Del Perro Pier and look out to sea or at the beach I get a solid 60fps but when I turn to look a bit further where all the buildings are that is when it now drops to 45 but I think I've managed to find a decent balance.

Thanks for the help Shadow 🙂

Set everything to Normal except texture quality, you can set that to high, and enable fast vsync in nvidia control panel (you can enable it globally or per program) and turn off msaa, that thing kills fps. Also, make sure vsync is disabled in-game.

Tell me if you see a difference in GPU usage and overall FPS.

I will try this configuration out shortly and let you know, thank you very much 🙂

How you can tell? My CPU never goes above 60%. I'm not super clued up about all this stuff.
I found this online and did a test with my hardware.

you have selected the bottle neck for general task swap it to Graphics intense and it will show you your bottle neck a bit better and how you can help/ upgrade

Oh I see! Nice one thanks.
Yeah it seems like it's say the GPU is in fact too weak for the CPU.
It's just weird how my CPU can be at 55% and my GPU at 18% and I'm getting 45fps.
I'm determined to fix this somehow though as it really does affect my experience in game.
If I could get my game to run at 55-60 constantly it'd be an absolute game changer for me.
Some of my friends play games at like 40-45fps and say "I don't see or feel a difference" but I do and as pathetic as it might sound it really bugs me when a game doesn't run at at least 60fps as it feels choppy.

Anyway thanks for the help everyone and I'll try to get saving for an upgrade 😃

That indeed helped my laptop using more of my GPU and reducing my CPU temp. Thanks.
