Expectation: downvotes offer good representation on topics

Reality: people are toxic as fuck

This used to be a thing, nothing of value was lost by its removal.

Typically the forums say that you're not really meant to give negative comments unless constructive. So I think a down vote would inherently be toxic. I love the idea, because it could make for a good healthy system of criticism however in reality I can see gang posts getting absolutely bombarded by mixing members that have beef icly and taking the beef oocly. Off the top of my head I can already think of a few. As the community currently stands, not a huge fan of this idea.

That’s exactly what used to happen. LEO posts or suggestions would get downvoted by gang, and vice versa for criminal posts by LEO.
People wouldn’t comment why they thought something was a bad idea and instead just downvoted.

Even when not looking at toxicity, Upvote is good because it shows support for an idea, a mere downvote doesn’t really contribute as it doesn’t address why you disagree. So a comment for disagreeing is way more valuable

Yeah a downvote button just encourages toxicity. particularly because theres no reasoning behind it. if you disagree with someone you should take the time to explain why. this is in contrast to agreeing someone where the upvote/heart emote is just a "hear hear."

Same thing with +1/-1 tbh. if you disagree you should give a reason why, develop the discussion.
