When you hover over the trunk, like when you get it to open, there's some words that pop up in the UI, one of them being OPEN, and one of them being SEARCH. Once you are looking at it, like when you opened it, use your mouse wheel to scroll through the options, until SEARCH is highlighted, then press E.
