For instance this treasure hunt one done today. A lot of people knew coordinates were involved but figured using an outside source would result in a rule break of Metagaming. Even when attempting to make sure it was okay or how to go about using the coordinates, responses weren't present at all. The events need to be planned better or need to be more specific when it comes to rules/instructions. Another thing that should happen is in the server guides - a list of allowed out-sourcing should be available. Such as maps on the internet with coordinates.
